​Last May, the CCL community met air pollution scientist, Dr. Shahir Masri and educator Athina Simolaris as they planned their cross-country climate outreach journey. Having returned now from their 12,000-mile tour through 36 states, during which they organized over 30 climate events, 35 video interviews, and surveyed more than 300 people, I sat down with Dr. Masri to hear his reflections and lessons learned from this ambitious project.

Scientist, Educator Visit Harwich during Nationwide Climate Action Tour

Shair Masri, an air pollution scientist, and his partner, educator Athina Simolaris, have put their careers aside for a year to embark on journey they’re calling “On the Road for Climate Action” to mobilize public action on the topic across the country, including on Cape Cod. On Friday afternoon, a room filled with 30 to 40 people at the Harwich Community Center, who came out to show their support and learn more about what they can do to stem climate change.

Among most scientists, there is no debate about the existence of climate change or humanity’s role in global warming. So as he began his career, air pollution scientist Shahir Masri intended to do what scientists do: gather evidence, conduct research and publish papers. But as Masri talked to people in his community and saw the level of misinformation about climate change, he realized he needed to do more. That’s why he and his girlfriend, Athina Simolaris, a high school and middle school teacher, set out from California in early August on a road trip across the country to engage Americans on one of the most pressing issues of our time.   “We’re at a time when action is increasingly important, and every year that we don’t act is one decade, probably, of increased warming that we’re committing ourselves to,” said Masri, 32, a Tustin, California, native.​
